Look Closely – is This a Sony a7R Camera or a Handgun?

Look closely. What do you see? A camera or a Smith & Wesson handgun?

If you said the Sony a7R camera you would be dead right.

If you said the Smith And Wesson 9mm Shield you would be right too.

Actually all it’s just me — playing with the delightful Sony a7R full-frame 36.4MP digital camera and a Smith and Wesson handgun. I fused — metamorphosed — them together to create a whole new, let’s call it a hand-camera illusion perhaps?

And I think you’d like the a7R…

  • World’s smallest and lightest interchangeable lens full-frame camera
  • Full frame 36.4MP resolution with 14-bit RAW recording
  • Fast Intelligent AF optimized for full-frame sensor

Smallest + lightness + portability – you get 36MP, true-to-life 2.4 million dot OLED viewfinder, Wi-Fi sharing – in other words, full-frame performance in a compact size.

The groovy new-ish Sony camera is of course not really a Smith and Wesson, although it’s probably better to shoot with. If we armed the world with cameras instead of handguns we’d have an inspired community that embraces creative art and photography. (You could shoot anyone and they would probably love you for it).

What a wild concept! :o)

As for the Sony a7R itself — I’ve got to be the world’s most tech-dense of all the photogs out there. (I can turn dials and flick switches, know my way around CSS and HTML) but to me there’s a pureness in simplicity. Still…

The new Sony a7R is a pocket full of niceness. You can grab it here on Amazon by the way. Yes I love it — but in my humbled opinion the a7R needs to be “rounder” – (It’s not round enough?) — Of course it’s early days for this model, and no-doubt Sony will revise, update and add more sexy curves… ain’t it always the way with new tech-gadgets?

Aim(ing) for progress, not perfection

But take a good look at the Sony. It’s impressive piece of kit. Almost tempted to upgrade the NEX7.

Maybe I can overlook the ‘old skool’ look I guess (straight edges). Not all cameras need to have sexy curves – check out the Leica for example (below) — plain, exquisite sensibilities:

The Leica M9 18MP Digital Range Finder camera is beautiful any way you look at it, right?

Any customer can have a car painted any color he wants so long as it is black.
— Henry Ford

In the Henry Ford production line, as the story goes, they worked out that black was the fastest paint color to dry, so the thinking was that they would make the most money by only selling black cars. There you go.

Note to self: Don’t upgrade (to the a7R) yet — Until you’ve earned it for your photos, sales of your photography or photo products.

Is it weird not to “spend” unless your business has brought the dollars in the door? (I think so).

And how are you going setting up your photo products, Kindle book or photo blog anyway? Got it done? Need help?

I always thought why are photogs carrying around big bang-bangs like the Nikon D3X or similar? (Probably because they want those huge resolution RAW files!) But do you really need such a big camera?

I mean, do you remember when the first mobile (cell) phones arrived on the scene? They were like small bricks in size. When do you stop and say OK we’ve gone as far as we can with this camera. Let’s start working on something else now. (Unlikely because most of us just love the innovation and creative process too much!)

I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.

With the a7R Sony have pushed the boundaries – possibly aiming for progress not perfection? – and created a smaller, lighter and easy-to-carry DSLR full framer that sure, awaits a range of lens, but for me, lightness is key.

I like to carry without everyone and his brother knowing about it – especially in remote countries where a big bang-bang stands out like no tomorrow.

While on the Sony a7R my man Chase writes a gooood review about it here – His more in-depth review of the a7R will fill the gaps of my rambling, handgun-toting piece.

Anyways, you can see how the gorgeous Sony a7R looks from a few different angles. I think it needs to be more shapely, but that’s just me.
