Sony Nex 7 Image Quality? This Weird Geek Video Figures It Out

Wondering About The Sony Nex 7 Image Quality? This (12+ Min) Weird Geek Video Figures It Out

The reviewer is a little on the weird side. But he definitely knows his stuff and reveals almost everything you need to know about the Sony NEX 7. (Good idea – use a LED flash) Although he thinks families will find it too complicated. A modern day family would eat it up!

Here’s some of the reasons why I love using the NEX 7:

  • Very small camera body – About half the size and weight of a typical DSLR camera. Add a Sony 16mm wide angle lens and you have a pocketable travel camera that won’t get noticed in places where they don’t like you to photograph.
  • Great build quality and tough body – I love the handgrip and the styling feels well balanced. It’s just the right size to really wrap your fingers around. I’ve heard some folks say the movie button is in the wrong position. I’d agree to disagree.
  • Fast shutter speed – Very little shutter lag so you capture decisive moments in sport, kids (etc). Up to 10 fps continuous shooting at full 24.3MP resolution. Apparently the Sony NEX 7 boasts the shortest release time in the world (as of August 2011).
  • Easy to use interface – Lots of options (sweep panorama etc) and other “gadget” type things (called Tri-Navi). The intuitive Tri-Navi 3-dial control gives you three control dials for hands-on access to three settings at a time. Really great when shooting black and white and you want to adjust the aperture and ISO on camera in real time, before capturing the shot. (Wow!)
  • Good battery life – It’ll take up to 400 shots on a single charge with Sony Lithium Ion Stamina battery power.
  • Electronic viewfinder – Fast focus even in low light. Bright and sharp 3″ tiltable LCD screen with superb resolution. Sunny weather mode boosts visibility even further (but you’ll need to take your sunglasses off). Tilts down and up to frame high and low-angle shots. So you can’t really do selfies with it BUT you can (sort of) if you set it up on tripod and use the self timer.
  • 11 Picture Effect modes – Innovative ways to make your images and videos pop including Posterization, Pop Color, Retro Photo, Partial Color, High Contrast Monochrome, Toy Camera, Soft Focus, HDR Painting and Miniature.

I also like the magnesium alloy body which makes it feel a bit like you’re carrying a Leica. (Great, right?) The Sony Nex 7 does take some getting used to though. (I’m still struggling through the manual) – mainly getting familiar with its three dial system. But with practice you’ll get it.

But it’s the image quality that really grabs me. And aside from the great photos, you can see your image through the view-finder the way it’s going to look after the photo is taken. Then it reviews your image so you get a chance to see the picture without having to take the viewfinder away from your eye. You’ll know if you need to recompose or change the lighting.

Heaps of other cool features like in-camera stitching of panoramic shots that works great. The RAW images are large and readable in most modern picture software – it comes with its own program too (although I just use Adobe Photoshop Elements). I’d seriously recommend getting a really good NEX lens for it, like the Sony SEL18200 18-200mm lens.

In a nutshell (and in the right hands), the Sony NEX 7 is dangerously good. So what are you waiting for? Go forth and create!
