Gorillapod Tripod Review – the Ultimate Lightweight Escape Tool?

How many times have you looked around for something to sit your camera on, or attach it to? You (should) always carry a tripod… but – there’s places tripods don’t go. Uneven surfaces. A fence that stands in the way. And sometimes you don’t want to carry a big, bulky Manfrotto hiking or bushwalking. I’d seen these Gorillapod tripods around but didn’t take much notice until I discovered you can do stuff like add wheels to them, suction cups or skate clamps. (Fantastic little low cost tool for videographers by the way).

The thing is, when you plan to travel, whether locally or an overseas trip (and you know it’s all-got-to-fit into your backpack), you want to carry as little as possible. But you also want to have at hand everything to deal with the variety of situations you might encounter. Even more so for the serious photo enthusiast. So compact, lightweight and flexible equipment choices are paramount.

That said, the Gorillapod is ideal. Its clever design and lightweight materials make it easy to carry (small enough to fit into camera bag or backpack without adding much bulk) and useful for a variety of photo situations. For larger cameras, the Gorillapod SLR-Zoom allows you to fine tune the position of your DSLR and easily switch between landscape and portrait orientations, keep your camera secure and balanced for hours – even in the most creative of positions.

Of course the Gorillapod will never replace a traditional tripod. But its size, versatility and those bendy legs that let you “hug” something or wrap it to a tree branch or car mirror and then use a remote trigger to trip the shutter makes it a clever, useful and travel-friendly photo accessory.

Think of all the time you’ll save by no longer asking strangers to take pictures of you and your friends!

Designed with the serious photographer in mind, the Gorillapod lets you mount your camera or video camera just about anywhere you want so that you can increase your creative options. All you need to do is use the universal tripod head to attach your camera to the standard tripod mount, then wrap the three flexible segmented legs securely to a nearby tree branch, fence, park bench, or anything else that’s convenient.

Durable and innovative, the Gorillapod weighs just 8.5 ounces, or 241 grams, and can support cameras – such as DSLRs with zoom lenses and video cameras – weighing up to 6.6 pounds, or 3 kilograms. The Gorillapod fits easily into a purse, backpack, or even a roomy jacket pocket.
